The Loft Artists Association (LAA) began in 1978 as the vision of 3 artists; sculptor James Jackson Burt, painter Sophia Gevas and folk art curator Dan Prince. These artists moved into the former Yale and Towne Lock Factory building to work and live. Soon, others followed, including internationally renowned sculptor, Reuben Nakian, and such was the beginning of what has become Stamford’s premier visual arts organization dedicated to creating mutually beneficial ties between the creative individual and the community.
It was during these early years that the artists opened their doors and put out the welcome mat to host the first Open Studios weekend. Art, music, films and dramatic events took place with guest attendance far above expectations. As many as 4,000 visitors have come over a single weekend to roam through the lofts, meet the artists and discuss the artwork.
